Sheer - It is the rise in the ship's deck in fore and aft directions, starting rising from the midships to maximum at the ends. This adds buoyancy at the end of the ships. At the two ends, they are termed us sheer aft and sheer forward.
Flare - flare is the outward curvature of the ship's side shell at the forward end. It increases buoyancy and limits sinkage of the bow in head seas.
Base line - A Horizontal line is drawn at the top of the keel plate.
Camber - It is the transverse curvature of the deck from centerline to sides. They help in draining water from the deck and add additional longitudinal strength to the ship.
Tumblehome - It is the inward curvature of the side shell towards the centerline above the waterline. Tumblehome reduces the width of the upper deck.
Rise of floor - It is the sloping of the bottom shell plating above the horizontal base from mid-section to the sides. This facilitates drainage of liquids into the ship's bilges.
